Hip-hip hooray for Mrs. November, Bri Velasquez!

There’s a definite chill in the air, as evidenced by the fact that I was able to wear SPF 15 at the beach with no fear of getting sunburned. You’ll all be sitting down to devour this years Thanksgiving dinner with a somewhat alarming amount of zeal. However, before you cram that fork full of mom’s turkey, grandma’s stuffing, your aunt’s gravy, and that can of cranberry sauce Dad opened at halftime during the Rams vs. Saints game (cause maybe he needs New Orleans defense to step it up a notch, I mean seriously right?!).

Raise that glass of sparkling cider and give a Christmas is coming, brace for black Friday, why is that a thing we always say we won’t do and do anyways?, toast to this years Mrs. November, Bri “Ray of Sunshine” Velasquez!

For those of you who don’t know Bri you’re missing out, big time. For those of us who do, we know Bri as this eternally positive and smiling sprite who comes to class, crushes the WOD, and then floats out of the gym on wings of purity and innocence. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating, maybe.

Bri is originally from Santa Barbara and when she’s not brightening the gym with her smile she’s working as a student counselor, playing volleyball on East Beach or spending time with her family.

Anyone who knows her can attest to Bri’s shining personality and positive attitude. She consistently approaches every obstacle with her trademark grace and understanding. I watched this young lady begin CrossFit with some definite reservations. Through determination, hard work and listening to her coaches she’s managed to gain a fantastic amount of strength (have you seen her handstands?), gotten a lot faster than she was, and found a community that she loves and has made some truly amazing friends.

Without someone like Bri, I wouldn’t have a consistent reference point for what it means to stay positive through adversity, chose to be kind before angry, caring before indifferent, and have a clear sense of who you are and what your mission is in this life. Bri personifies this and it’s what makes her so special to us, everyone she meets, and why we chose her as AOTM.

Bri, we love you, you’re a rare bird indeed and we’re glad you chose to nest in the oak tree that is this gym. This Thanksgiving we’ll raise our glasses to you and look forward to many more workouts, beach days, post its just saying “Hi Baker,” that smile that can’t be suppressed, and being thankful that we had the good fortune to meet you.
